Saffron (Crocus sativus) is one of the most precious spices humanity has ever discovered, with a history spanning thousands of years. In the fertile soils of Afghanistan's Herat region, the crimson stigmas inside purple flowers that bloom each November are hand-picked one by one before dawn.
Producing one kilogram of saffron requires processing approximately 150,000 flowers. This incredible labor and precision makes saffron the most expensive spice in the world by weight. Used for centuries in Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Asian cuisines, saffron adds far more than its unique golden color, extraordinary aroma and deep flavor.
